TAZAMA (Tanzania Zambia Mafuta) Pipelines Limited was incorporated in 1968 and is owned by the government of the Republic of Zambia with 66.7% share capital and the government of the United Republic of Tanzania with 33.3% share capital.
The company was formed for the purpose of cheaply transporting crude oil or its petroleum products from the port of Dar-es-Salaam into landlocked Zambia. TAZAMA owns, operates and maintains a crude oil pipeline from the port of Dar-es-Salaam to INDENI Refinery in Ndola covering a total distance of 1,710km (954km is 8 inch pipeline and 798km is 12 inch pipeline).
The pipeline has an installed capacity of 1.1million metric tons per annum with a current annual throughput capacity of 800,000 metric tons per annum.
The company also owns, operates and maintains a Tank Farm at Kigamboni in Dar-es-Salaam consisting of six tanks with a total holding capacity of 232,000 cubic metres.
Transportation of crude oil is achieved through seven pump stations (Five in Tanzania and Two in Zambia).
TAZAMA also manages the Ndola Fuel Terminal and is the government agent in the sale of petroleum products to Oil Marketing Companies (OMC’s).
